Exercises like tai chi and qigong are quite different.they build strength from a gentle approach. Many "western" approaches are attacking on the body, harsh, intense and basically a form of punishment to your body. One thing that Eastern Medicines have a leg up on is exercise, IMO. I wasn't familiar, so I googled "p90x3" and it looks like a "boot-camp" type routine. However I am noticing positive changes in body tone so I carry on. I exercise for 30 mins every day (p90x3) and often feel tired afterwards. There is some interesting research happening that perhaps one day will more fully convey Chinese Medicine in terms of Western science, but it's still a long ways away.Įven spiritual medicine can have amazing placebo effects. Most Westerners balk at the "energy" theory of Chinese and other Medicines, but then scratch their heads when said Medicines get results that Western approaches can't. The scientific method (observation, record results) was used to develop the Medicine thousands of years ago. None of us is just "one type" as we are all made up of all 5 types, which further complicates it. And since there's 3 other "types", they too can run hot or cool. But the whole 5 Element system is vastly complex, vastly detailed and people spend their entire lives devoted to mastering it. An "earth" person (usually fuller-bodied, cares deeply for others, prefers home vs nomadic, etc.) are often types who can run hot. So the "5 Element" (constitutional) link I sent you will give you some insight, but the way it's practiced today is different than 100 years ago.Īgain, in an oversimplistic explanation, someone who identifies as having a "metal" constitution (usually thin, wirey, strong value system, etc.) are often types who run cold. IMO, he had some good points on that, but he was a power egomaniac who killed and terrified his own people. He thought it made China look like a backwards and superstitious society. Mao hated the spiritual/esoteric parts of Chinese Medicine, so he killed thousands of doctors and few fled to other countries. The short of it is that prior to the dictator Mao coming to power in the 20th century, Chinese Medicine was not what you see today. How much of this is backed up by Western science, I can't tell ya. To learn more about constitutions from a Chinese Medicine perspective, this could be helpful. If you cannot get into this mindset then you are missing part of the method, and should dial it back and focus on the entry into the cold and your mindset.Ĭan you post any links or search times I should try to find out more about bodies running hot and cold.It does sound simplistic but the fact remains a lot of traditional Eastern medicine usually ends up getting proven by science or at the very least having a basis in fact. The sports car, because its already running near optimal, will benefit from that change and it will be noticeable to the driver.Īlso, to iterate what a few others have said, the WHM is partially a meditative experience where one must learn to embrace and welcome discomfort. The clunker you wont notice the better tires on 99% of the time and will be drowned out by the magnitude of other issues. Think of it like putting better tires on a sports car vs an old clunker. Once past the initial bottleneck and doing these things correctly, then the WHM may additionally contribute to your energy goals. Also, there could be an underlying problem such as a nutrient deficiency or gut microbiome problem (as an example) that the body cannot overcome without intervention, and that is your bottleneck. If you're missing one of these, WHM may not do anything (although it can help things like sleep). Mainly, good diet, good sleep, good social life, and proper exercise. there may be something more obvious you need to do to get the changes you're looking for before the WHM.
